LET’S PLAY?!
Tatiana Villani, 5-channel video installation, 2017
The project is about migration – which mostly finds access to new lands through the sea – like foam, floating on the waves. Foam, technically, is made by an input of energy into the system; this tension produces an unstable structure in which the union of liquid and gas is induced, then agglomerates of bubbles appear. Migration therefore takes the form of an impersonal cumulation of bubbles – people without identity. We are like struck in this apparently indistinct agglomeration that moves and changes. Continuous exposure to painful images produces a kind of protective wall, de-personalizes and removes the empathic participation of the spectator. In this case the idea is that a metaphor can be the key to generate a personal opening and reflection. In an attempt to bring this heavy reality as a whole within the limits of the acceptable, Let’s play?! builds a metaphorical model of the system to emphasize the movements of forces. The model is an inflatable children’s pool, where two shores become visible, two micro-worlds. The sea is shaken, creating foam that is carried away from the “coast” where it was born, through the air or other means of transport. Everything is built as a playful world set, and is activated with toys and funny instruments. Let’s play?! is conceived as a multichannel installation to create an analogy with the idea of a mediatic Babel tower.
Video credit shooting: Alessandro Giannetti, Bärbel Reinhard. Assistents: Manuel Perna, Chiara Verona. Players: Ares Delgado Verona, Gea Delgado Verona, Ester Bertolani, Manuel Perna, Tatiana Villani. Sound: Bärbel Reinhard, Tatiana Villani. Editing: Tatiana Villani. Special thanks: Giacomo Verde.
