"You only matter when they see you" is a self-portrait that depicts in an ironic and surreal way an aspect of our society today: the pressure caused by appearances and aesthetic models conveyed by social media. These beauty standards are often unhealthy and unfortunately many people feel obliged to follow them to feel accepted.
In the photo there’s a pair of floating legs with high colored heels. I specifically wanted to frame only that part of the body to obtain an enigmatic image that would lead people to question themselves about the subject and its meaning. "Is she dead as a result of these sometimes crazy and unattainable standards? Is she swimming in heels to feel more confident? Or sunbathing on the edge of a pool to be noticed?". All interpretations are possible.
