THE WAY
Videotape VHS | 4:3 | colour | sound | loop | 2023
“THE WAY” is a ritual action. The video is a cyclical question about the function of doing bad and doing good. The continuous return to the image of Jesus, the symbol of my upbringing, is a symbolic documentation of my return home. I went back to live with my family for a while after returning to Italy. The foreign experience had ended. It ended with a spiritual crisis and
much suffering. I had not resided in my native home for many years. The large painting of Christ on the stairs has always fascinated me. He imposes himself on the ascent and descent of those who pass by. His painted body, like a presence to be encountered. In the passage I look at
him with different temporal eyes: of the child who believes in eternal goodness and the disenchanted adult. Two complementary forces, seeking balance, between matter and spirit.
“The Way” is a circular and vertical video, directions that come together in a spiral. The spiral is contemplated as a cathartic motion of passage from a living space to a dead one. Black has no negative connotations, but is connoted as looking into the dark, in a continuous im-
mersion into the light. Contemplating Golgotha I continue to climb the stairs with my cross: “Why this evil in living?”
