The triptych is part of the "Un-Perfect" project, which was presented during Turin Art Week at Paratissima 2024. The complete visual project consists of eight photographs, one triptych, and one interactive installation.
"Perfect people do not argue, do not lie, do not make mistakes, and do not exist," Aristotle declared from the height of his wisdom. Yet, in today's society, looking one's best seems to have become an imperative, the only way to gain respect and acceptance.
This desire stems from a primal survival instinct, driving individuals to behave and appear like others—or better than them—in order to fit in.
In a parallel world, the little traffic light figures appear without filters or frills, authentic in their simplicity. By reflecting the light within themselves, they manage to embrace their originality, which is enough to identify them at a glance and make them perfect.
"Man in the Mirror" concludes the visual journey "Un-Perfect." Like in the fairy tale Snow White, people use digital mirrors—social media—to seek confirmation of what they want to see. However, a real mirror—one that we don't control—might reveal something unexpected.
While their outward appearance seems balanced according to social standards, the image in the mirror is not quite what we would have expected. The reflections appear deformed and represent different desires and personalities: from the red dominated by the two heads, to the yellow with the predator's face and a machete, and then to the green which peacefully carries its burden in the opposite direction.
Can we learn something about ourselves from this unexpected reflection? "Man in the Mirror" focuses on the self and the ability to recognize one's flaws as an integral part of the whole. Recognition is the first step toward making a change or accepting oneself as one is.
