Biografia
Francesco Meloni (Italia, 1973) vive tra Cagliari e Milano. La sua formazione inizia presso il Liceo artistico di Cagliari, prosegue con il London College of Communication, la Photofusion di Londra e si conclude con la Laurea in Filosofia e il Master in “Pedagogia dell’Espressione” presso l’Università Roma Tre.
Conosciuto come Mei Ziqian (fino al 2020), Francesco Meloni è un artista multidisciplinare che utilizza le metafore architettoniche, il reportage e l'indagine sul campo nel contesto delle aree di costruzione, instaurando strette connessioni con gli operai coinvolti nei progetti. Collabora attivamente con essi al fine di ottenere una descrizione autentica delle dinamiche del lavoro, nel contesto operativo. In questo ambito, la classe operaia non viene considerata come semplice conseguenza del non possesso dei mezzi di produzione, ma in chiave più dinamica. Questa prassi tenta di delineare il rapporto tra lavoro e vita, tra struttura e sovrastruttura, al fine di comprendere le modalità in cui la realtà si manifesta, ci influenza e talvolta ci illude.
L'artista è ossessionato dal richiamo al cantiere e all'edificio tout court, dove il cemento, elemento fondamentale delle realtà urbane coinvolto nella trasformazione selvaggia di natura e paesaggi, diventa anche il materiale più adatto per rappresentare in chiave estetica gli esiti delle ricerche condotte sul campo. Si delinea in questo modo un “universo architettonico” in cui i rapporti arte-lavoro prendono plasticamente forma di semi-strutture abitative provvisorie o parti di queste, composte da cemento a vista o con forti richiami al tessile; ma anche da elementi con cui l'operaio convive e dialoga. Seguendo questo statuto, prende vita “l’estetica di Meloni”, attraverso la costruzione di "mondi abitativi" che offrono la possibilità di evidenziare la sua prospettiva critica, superando il mero aspetto materiale.
L'artista è stato selezionato e ha conseguito diversi premi nazionali e internazionali come il primo premio alla Florence Biennal del 2011 (sezione installazioni), Signal Festival, Factory Art Berlin, Combat Prize, Yicca Prize, Premio Nocivelli (terzo classificato), Exibart Prize 20, Un-fair Milano, Viafarini-in-Residence nelle annualità 2022 e 2023 e attualmente in residenza presso lo Studio Frem Milano.

Francesco Meloni (Italy, 1973) lives between Cagliari and Milan. He began his training at an Art High School in Cagliari and went on to study at the London College of Communication (Photofusion). He then returned to Italy and took a degree in philosophy and a Master’s degree in the "Pedagogy of Expression" at ‘Roma Tre’ University.
Formerly known as Mei Ziqian (until 2020), Francesco Meloni is a multidisciplinary artist who uses architectural metaphors, reportage and field investigation in the context of construction sites, establishing close connections with the workers involved in the projects he has developed. He actively collaborates with them in order to obtain an authentic description of the dynamics of work, in the context of their daily labour. In such a context, the working classes are not merely seen as those who do not own the means of production but are viewed in a more dynamic light. This practice attempts to outline the relationship between work and life, between structure and superstructure, with the aim of understanding the ways in which reality manifests itself, influences us and sometimes disappoints us.
The artist is beguiled by the appeal of the construction site and building tout court. Buildings are places where concrete is the fundamental element of urban settings involved in the radical transformation of nature and landscapes and is also the most suitable material to epitomise the results of his field research conducted in an aesthetic key. In this way, an "architectural universe" forms an outline within which art-work relationships assume the plastic form of temporary semi-housing structures or parts of these, consisting of exposed concrete and with clear allusions to textiles. All of these are elements with which the worker lives and interacts. Following this statute, "Meloni's aesthetics" comes to life, through the construction of "living worlds" that offer the possibility of highlighting his critical perspective, thus transcending the mere material aspect.
