The painting is a collage of fabrics and represents the digital synthesis of a photograph of the work Lamentation over the Dead Christ (Deposition) by the Flemish painter Anthony van Dyck, produced between 1629 and 1630. The canvas, along with 400 other works of art that belonged to the Kaiser Friedrich Museum, was burned in May 1945 following the arson that destroyed the Flakturm, the armored tower where these masterpieces were kept by the Nazis.
