Title: "Chaos: The World Engraved in Faces"
Media: Metal Plate
Mixed media on metal plate, dry etching and unconventional printing, oxidation
Dim. 40 x 0.3 x 100 cm
The work engraved on metal plate presents a layered surface of signs, faces, and material traces, created through unconventional printing techniques and oxidation processes that contribute to a complex and profoundly expressive visual effect. The material of the plate itself becomes an integral part of the artistic language: corrosion, color stains, and abrasions generate an irregular texture that evokes the passage of time and the tensions of contemporaneity.
At the center of the composition, a constellation of human faces emerges, drawn with a simple yet incisive line. The figures clearly belong to an ethnic and cultural plurality, suggesting the image of a global and interconnected society. The faces are not idealized: on the contrary, they display an intense range of emotions—astonishment, pain, joy, anxiety, weariness—that reflect the complexity of the human experience in the present. Some gazes seem to question the viewer, while others appear lost in an interior dimension, as if bearing the weight of collective events.
The fragmented arrangement of the figures produces a choral visual narrative. There is no single protagonist: the protagonist is society itself, represented through the diffuse humanity of the faces. The artist thus constructs a sort of emotional archive of contemporaneity, where expressions bear witness to the current events that mark our time: conflicts, migrations, social crises, but also moments of solidarity, hope, and resilience.
The areas of oxidation and the irregular color fields introduce an almost organic dimension. The greens, yellows, and reds that emerge from the metal surface recall natural processes of transformation and decay, metaphorically suggesting the fragility of social structures and the constant mutation of reality. In some places, the material seems to invade or partially erase the faces, as if history itself were leaving marks and scars on individual identities.
The presence of writings and textual fragments adds a further level of interpretation: the words become an echo of collective thought and the media coverage of contemporary events. However, these elements do not provide a closed narrative; rather, they open up an interpretative space, inviting the viewer to engage with the work's meaning.
Overall, the work presents a critical reflection on contemporary society. Through the experimental engraving technique and the multiplicity of faces, the artist stages the human dimension of contemporary news, transforming the metal sheet into a sort of mirror of current social conditions. The work does not simply represent reality, but conveys its emotional and moral tension, reminding us that behind every collective event there are always faces, stories, and feelings.
