Bitumen on canvas 250 x 150 cm
2021
A united pack, cohesive in a dramatic exodus, all in one direction.
Pure instinct.
In the last two years the deer has often been the subject of my works.
The interest in this animal stems from the fascination I have always felt for its elegance, its sweetness, confidentiality and mystery.
The deer is perhaps the most represented animal in a symbolic, mythical and religious way, due to its grace, its royalty and its strength.
The horns are the characterizing element of the deer and can be comparable to tree branches both from an aesthetic point of view and for their development value of union between the higher and lower forces, death and rebirth.
In the period of the lockdown caused by the Covid epidemic, we have witnessed the rapprochement of wild animals to inhabited centers, practically deserted at that time. The phenomenon was extraordinary, rabbits, deer, wild boars, foxes and fawns were immortalized in the photos of the outskirts of ghostly cities.
I made several pictorial works on those images and in the last year I worked on a project entitled OUT THERE that I presented in Milan at the Scalo Lambrate and curated by Nicolas Ballario.
The project elaborated the thought linked to the concept of Hyperobject of the contemporary philosopher Timothy Morton.
The concept of this artistic cycle concerns man's perception of the great problems of the planet and the serious effects that pollution causes on the environment.
In the Out there exhibition, the deer, present in both painting and sculpture, is used in opposition to man, with opposite attitudes and reactions.
Man is characterized by individualism, by the scattered multitude, by the apparent light-heartedness. Selfishness and distancing.
The deer moves in a united herd, cohesive in a dramatic exodus, towards a single direction. Pure instinct.
In the picture that I propose, the pack is experiencing a desperate exodus, a race towards a single direction following the instinct for survival.
