"How to speak about the Earth without taking it to be an already composed whole, without adding to it a coherence that it lacks, and yet without deanimating it by representing the organisms that keep the thin film of the critical zones alive as mere inert and passive passengers on a physio-chemical system?" (Bruno Latour: Facing Gaia)
We lack the words to speak of the earth, to describe the multiform, manifold relationships in which we live. This new language must bring together science and philosophy, history and everyday life, politics and anthropology, and so much more. A language that we share with natural beings as well as with the unloved remnants of civilisation.
The painting "How To Speak About The Earth" is done with gouache, spray paint and acrylics on unstreched canvas. Distorted, fragmentary but nonetheless beautiful landscapes are combined with found quotes and scraps of words that shook me and should do the same to the viewer. It is the titular part of the series "How to Speak about the Earth", which was started in fall 2020. At its heart is the engagement with the the so called "climate crisis" and Bruno Latour's analysis of the current situation in his book "Facing Gaia".
