“The People of the Bark” is a site-specific land art piece created for the SMACH Biennale 2023. It is a project designed for the forests of the Dolomites, inspired by the legends of these magical mountains, telling of a wondrous future.
The world is full of stories about the future of humanity and our planet. It seems we are destined to be replaced by robots, to die of hunger or plastic, forced to use augmented reality visors in the metaverse to remember what the Earth was like before atomic destruction. And what if things were different? What would happen if humanity managed to evolve in harmony and understanding of unity with all creation? What if all those discussions about the union of man with nature came true? What if the legends told by many populations, including the Ladin ones, where humans can transform into trees, rain, or marmots, were true? What if all of humanity gathered all insights, inspirations, and followed its nature in harmony with the Universe?
The women and men of the People of the Bark are the visionary answer to this question. A legend, perhaps a myth, maybe a prophecy, or just a hope, but it's what I have seen, heard, and enjoyed.
THE PEOPLE OF THE BARK
The people of the bark live in the woods, or rather, they are the woods. They can transform into every plant, are connected with the entire Plant Kingdom, knowing every power and emotion. Their daily practice, from which the tribe gets its name, is to physically and spiritually immerse themselves in the trees.
The men and women of the bark are still, like the trees. They practice vegetal immobility and the art of existence without movement. This momentary metamorphosis lasts for centuries or seconds. Humans and trees are in continuous mimesis and mitosis. The tribe of the bark exists and lives like this, exactly as you imagine, feeling what the trees feel. When they are together, they are connected, united, they transmit their experiences, but above all, their essences, they recognize each other, respect each other, admire each other.
This story is a seed that comes from both the past and the future, a narrative that makes utopia possible. If you can imagine it, you can create it.
