Birth of a Nation is a flag developed during the residency, curated by Maurizio Coccia, where we explored the theme of identity. With this work, I tackled the national theme, starting from a broader perspective, such as the national one, and gradually narrowing it down to the small town level, where each of us can see ourselves reflected.
Birth of a Nation speaks about Italy through the flag of the Emeritus President of the Republic, the Kingdom of Sardinia (the founder of Italy), and the municipalities of Ossi (my hometown) and Serrenti (the residency town). The wheat ears, a recurring symbol in both towns, were created—one by me and the other by D. Mariani, originally from Serrenti—joining the two towns under a single symbol.
Birth of a Nation delves into identity in its deepest sense, moving from the micro to the macro, exploring the concept of identity. The title is a reference to the 1915 film by D.W. Griffith, but it solely recalls the role of the Kingdom of Sardinia in the founding of a united Italy.
Italy > external, Sardinia > central, Serrenti/Ossi > identity.
