The installation is of variable sizes (sizes indicated for a space of 25 square meters). The materials used to make this work are only two: larch bark and essential oils of larch. The space in which the installation is exposed is bare of any furniture, since the work occupies the entire floor of the room. The bark, sprayed with essential oils of larch and arranged irregularly, create heaps of various heights: from a minimum of 4 cm to a maximum of about 100 cm.
Scents of a memory is an installation that wants to play with the memory of the spectator. Thanks to a very complex neurological process, scents remind us of past memories. In fact, the brain area that processes the olfactory experience is connected to both the amygdala and the hippocampus, parts of the brain that regulate the emotions and the processing of memories respectively. By relying on this peculiarity of the human being the aim of the work is to create an olfactory time machine. The installation consists of a carpet of larch bark, irregular and entirely walkable. But the real key to reading the work is the olfactory component: what strikes the visitor the most are the perfumes released by the barks. These scents will bring back memories of the past, perhaps lost: a trip to the mountains, the fireplace lit in a cabin isolated in the woods, the carpentry shop where the furniture of one's home was bought or more. Or they’ll give the viewer a new memory. Perhaps one day, walking through a forest or collecting wood to light a fire, those minutes spent inside this installation will be remembered. A temporal journey through the meanders of Memory: present, past and future.
