The installation "Looks Beyond the Horizon" by Elisabetta Accoto features three small female figures in hand-molded and painted terracotta, approximately five centimeters tall. The figurines are placed side by side, seen from behind, gazing out to sea and the horizon. Their clothing is simple yet vibrant: an orange dress with decorative motifs and a blue headdress, a central figure with a blue skirt and a light-colored veil, and a third wearing a green dress decorated with small red dots. The glossy surface and deliberately simple forms evoke an almost naive, domestic, and artisanal language.
The choice to depict the three women from behind is crucial: the viewer does not see their faces, but shares the direction of their gaze. This visual device invites us to imagine what they are observing and what they might expect from the horizon. The horizon thus becomes a symbol of possibility, hope, and the future.
The figures, though similar in posture, convey different identities through their colors, hairstyles, and clothing. This variety suggests different histories, cultural backgrounds, or social conditions, yet united by a common moment of contemplation and expectation.
Contemporary Social Contextualization
In the current social context, the work can be read as a metaphor for several themes:
1. Female Community and Solidarity
The three figures, standing close together, evoke a sense of community and sharing. In the contemporary world, marked by social transformations and demands for rights, the image can represent the strength of solidarity among women, who face the future together.
2. Migration and a Look to the Future
The presence of the sea and the horizon inevitably evokes the theme of migration and journeys toward new possibilities. The figures could represent women from different cultures observing an uncertain but hopeful future.
3. Expectation and Social Change
The act of looking into the distance also suggests a time of waiting and reflection. In a rapidly changing society—amid economic crises, cultural transformations, and new global challenges—the three women embody humanity looking to the future, seeking direction.
4. The Value of the Everyday
The small size and simple appearance of the figurines evoke the domestic and popular dimension. The artist seems to want to remind us that great social transformations occur through ordinary people, often invisible but central to building the future.
