HD video, color, sound. Some Things About Some Things is an experimental documentary filmed over the course of one year in Czechia, where I spent part of my childhood. It approaches personal memory obliquely through conversations with my aunt. Speaking freely about her life and childhood in communist Czechoslovakia, she reflects on loss, faith, and resilience, including the recent loss of her home, which she meets with unwavering optimism.
The interviews unfold without imposed structure or direction, allowing repetitions, hesitations, even contradictions, so minor details can reveal deeper truths. These conversations are interwoven with playful camera explorations of childhood spaces and objects, self-recorded fragments, and family archival photographs. Together, these levels evocate an intimate and nostalgic space, creating a meditation on the playfulness and lightness of childhood, as well as the loss and grief tied to the past.
