The Paradise Lost is inspired by a poignant scene from a television series (Downton Abbey), in which a young soldier lies in a field hospital after being wounded in the eye by shrapnel from an explosive device. His pale, marked face holds an expression of awe, pain, and memory—a gaze that speaks of what has been endured and what remains within.
His wounded yet watchful eyes form the symbolic core of the work: more than organs of perception, they are portals to the soul, bearing witness to trauma and to a vanished beauty. Around him, in a dusky sky, bluebirds take flight—fragile emblems of lost freedom, and yet, of hope that still stirs.
The smoky background and bare branches evoke a world ravaged, yet not devoid of yearning. Every element in the composition echoes a fall—a paradise violated by war—and at the same time, a quiet longing for light, for a return, however idealized, to what was whole, human, and alive.
This piece is a meditation on fractured identity and the power of memory as a form of resistance. Even in deep rupture, there remains a fragile but vital impulse toward a future in bloom—a hope, however tremulous, that still rises. - Digital painting by Procreate, fine art painting on canvas.
