What It Was To Be Me is the result of a search through my personal archive. I included material I found on my old Nintendo, dating back to when I was about nine years old. They are memories of my childhood in the Czech Republic, filled with idyllic and carefree summers. The other photographs come from my old camera and contain imperfections caused by poor storage of the memory card. Perpendicular aerial shots were taken with a drone during a trip to the United States with my father. The voiceover is the result of highlighted sections found in Joan Didion’s books I read and an interview with Noam Chomsky.
Their words intriguingly resonated in my work, considering that the images are my personal "paid passage to the world out there" (in the words of Didion), to what I have been, what I have banished, what I have forgotten.
I aimed to create a visual wasteland, where loss and nostalgia intertwine. Through Didion’s HD video, sound, color. words and Chomsky’s insights, I explore my own wastelands of memory, as spaces of disappearance, transformation, and displaced meaning.
