Catharsis (noun) [from Greek κάϑαρσις "purification", derived from καϑαίρω "to purify"].
In ancient Greek religion, Pythagorean philosophy, and Platonic philosophy, it denoted both the magical ritual of purification, aimed at cleansing the contaminated body, and the liberation of the soul from the irrational. In particular, according to Aristotle, it referred to the purification from passions induced in spectators by tragedy.
In the history of aesthetics, it refers to the liberating action of poetry that purifies from passions; in the aesthetics of B. Croce, it represents the supreme moment of poetic intuition. In a broader sense, in literary language, the term is also used with the generic meaning of purification, liberation from passions.
In psychoanalysis, it refers to the process of total or partial liberation from severe and persistent conflicts or from a state of anxiety, achieved through the complete recall of responsible events, which are relived at a conscious level, both on a rational and an emotional level.
