The contact with the stencil and the reproduction process makes a paper fragment a banknote a fragment of paper into a banknote. This reproduction by contact generates a paradox of values: the power of uniqueness and unlimited reproduction and thus issuance. This value is unique and exclusive to the power of exchange.
The element of contact remains a guarantee of uniqueness, authenticity and power, and therefore of aura, at the same time as the power of exchange.
Its intrinsic value is small, given the raw costs of production while its nominal value is predetermined. The element of contact remains a guarantee of uniqueness, authenticity and power, hence of aura, beyond its own reproduction. Its intrinsic value is small, given the raw costs of production while its nominal value is predetermined.
By cancelling the banknotes and recording this operation on another paper support, I wanted to make the banknote a fragment of paper again and a fragment of paper and transfer its value through the contact surfaces, which determines the face value and therefore the exchange value.
The front and back of the paper coincide with the erasures from the front and back of the banknote.
The market value of this work coincides with the face value The market value of this work coincides with the original face value of the banknote, as if by transferring the surface of the banknote the value had also been transferred and thus duplicated.
Series: inks from €uro banknotes
transferred on Centenaire watercolour paper 300g/m2, front and back
