ESSENCES - What we are, what we were, what we will be. series: Of death, of life -
(copper plate, terracotta vase, wooden board cut in two, burnt matches, fire.) unique piece.
The first object-sculpture on which I used fire was ESSENCES. In Essences I arranged the matches to be burned on the copper plate so as to write a large M, the M of Malacarne and the fire followed this arrangement leaving a burnt mark on the plate as I would never have hoped. The object-sculpture is completed with the use of hundreds of other matches burned in my small bonfires and collected inside the vase placed on the work.
Fire is like ink that stains, marks, is writing on the work and it is therefore necessary to learn to control the fire-writing using suitable tools to stoke it, move it, put it out, as if they were brushes, pens, pencils or spray paint cans.
I have always kept the wooden matches used in the kitchen, with which I make small bonfires to film with the video camera. Fire creates that sort of enchantment that humans have known since cave times and this enchantment caused by the tongues of flame, I believe is nothing more than a bit of pure time, a brief daydream where the body and mind take a break, calm down.
Write a poem on the object using the “language of fire”.
