Like a rising sun, the yellow of the traffic light introduces the theme of choice. Every day, we are faced with decisions. Even deciding not to decide, procrastinating, and letting others or events decide for us is a decision in itself. Thus, this yellow light takes on all its meanings, including the call for attention at a crossroads. The sun rises; the choice is ours.
This artwork is part of the "Another Perspective" project, which reinterprets traffic lights as mirrors of our feelings. It was presented during Turin Art Week at Paratissima 2022. The complete visual project consists of 11 photographs, one triptych, and one installation.
Below is an excerpt from the "Another Perspective" project statement by curator Rosanna Accordino:
Daily busy performing acts, crossing cities, moving toward inexistent destinations, and then returning to the starting point and beginning again: this is how the stylized traffic light men, from their high vantage point, would read each person’s life.
Unable to figure out the reasons for a sometimes hurried and sometimes slow pace. They would assign the green color to pleasant actions shared by the rest of the community, and red to vices and taboos.
While yellow, often the most underestimated signal, represents choice, free will, and change.
In a play between real and imaginary, Matteo Cervone stages daily routines with common objects that, in their impartiality, highlight contemporary merits and flaws.
