…thus it came that of that art—so current, so alive—
that tragic, comic spectacle—we chose it to revive;
with that Dante, restless, burning, in new verses tightly turning,
he devoted it to one—tragic maker, ever yearning—
and along that biting pathway, he came with us, to guide, to strive…
…such demonic art emerging from the present world’s domain,
that infernal act of making, that inscrutable terrain,
to the crowds uncomprehending, misperceiving, ever bending,
it was there to make things clearer,
and to all of us dismayed—troubled, startled, and afraid—
it arrived with gentle comfort drawing nearer…
…as for those renowned creators, by all honored, celebrated,
those already turned to relics, museum-bound, canonized, consecrated,
all of them still collaborating, worn and weary, dedicating,
striving, giving, never ceasing, endlessly participating,
those arcana now grown ancient, seeking form to renovate—
so that “Magician” or “Papess,”
“Tempest,” “Star,” or “Wheel” of fate,
might appear no longer fitting, no longer truly up to date;
but instead “the Narcissist,” “the Tourist,” and “the Stylist,”
“the Psychic” and “the Kitschist,” even “the Environmentalist,”
“the Hedonist,” “the Conspiracist,”
these new figures might align
far more closely with the chaos
of this age of art’s design…
…those arcana reimagined, retitled and redesigned,
that the masters longed to repaint, reshaping vision, form, and mind,
all of them together striving, hoping, yearning, still contriving,
for that artist lost and shaken in this world we now call living—
in this global, shifting landscape, dazed, uncertain, unconfined,
who set forth into the cosmos of creation, harsh, unkind,
powerless to reinvent himself, his language left behind,
now compelled to quote, recycle, what the past has undersigned—
that old art that haunts and hunts him, never leaving him in peace,
who can say if that poor soul, that desperate mind without release,
through these arcana now renewed, may yet find some form of cease…
…and that all we artists, through their light, may find release.
